Freshen Your Home for Spring

Freshen Your Home for Spring

The calendar says spring! To get out of that winter rut, we’re sharing some of our favourite ways to freshen your home for a new season.

Don’t block windows.
Your windows are there to provide natural light. Tall items in front of windows, such as bookcases and large plants, block natural sunlight. Move larger items away from windows to soak up as much sunshine as possible.

Light curtains.
Draperies created with heavy materials add weight to a space. Select sheer curtains for a fresh and light feel.

Mirrors.
Mirrors reflect light. For optimal results, place mirrors across from light sources, such as windows. Mirrors also assist in making a space feel larger, so the benefits are great!

Add colour.
This is probably the best way to breathe new life into any space in your home and there are so many ways to add colour to a space. Head to your local home store or flip through magazines to find that perfect paint colour. A fresh coat on your walls (or just an accent wall) will brighten your space for spring. But painting isn’t the only option. Accent pieces, like throw pillows, arm chairs and side tables featuring bright hues will also do the trick in a dark space.

Clean.
‘Tis the season for a little spring cleaning! If it’s been awhile since you gave your home a good dusting and scrub down, then now’s the time to get your abode in tip-top shape. Clean all light fixtures, such as sconces and chandeliers, to remove dusty and dirty layers that may be blocking light.

Switch out lightbulbs.
If you’re currently using dingy yellow-tinted lightbulbs, swap them out for bright white LED bulbs. Not only do they provide more light, they’re also more energy-efficient!

Add flowers and plants.
Bring a little bit of the outdoors in with fresh cut flowers and plants. Beautiful blooms and greenery are always a bright spot in any space. As an added bonus, certain plants will assist in purifying your home’s air.

Give floors a facelift.
Dark floors may also be the cause of lack of light. If you don’t want to do a complete overhaul and remove your current floor, consider adding a lighter-hued area rug. This light accent will make a big difference.

Swap a solid door for a glass door.
To increase natural light, swap a solid door for a glass door. Compared to solid doors, glass doors make a room feel larger and more open.
